PRIMAL PET GROUP

Engineered Fire Protection for Cold Storage Without Compromise
Precision-designed life safety systems protecting Primal Pet Group’s temperature-controlled operations in Abilene, Texas.

Primal Pet Group set out to develop a highly reliable, code-compliant fire protection system for its new food processing and cold storage facility in Abilene, Texas. The project required a life-safety solution capable of protecting multiple environments—including processing areas, freezer storage, cold docks, and office space—each operating at different temperature thresholds. Primal Pet needed a system that met rigorous regulatory standards while safeguarding personnel, equipment and inventory without disrupting operations.

Value Delivered

North American Fire Protection delivered a fully engineered fire protection solution tailored to the complex demands of food processing and cold storage operations. Leveraging deep expertise in temperature-controlled environments, the NAFPCO team designed and installed a system that provides consistent, dependable protection across wet, dry and freezer conditions.

By upgrading critical infrastructure and integrating advanced suppression and detection technologies, the project enhanced overall facility resilience and long-term operational safety. The result was a seamless, high-performance fire protection system that supports Primal Pet Group’s commitment to quality, safety and operational excellence—delivered through close coordination with the project team and aligned with the construction schedule

Scope of Services

North American Fire Protection provided a complete fire sprinkler system for the approximately 156,000-square-foot food processing and cold storage facility, including:

  • Fire Pump Upgrade: Installation of a new 2,500 GPM, 90 PSI diesel-driven fire pump, replacing an existing 1,500 GPM unit to ensure adequate water supply and system reliability.
  • System Infrastructure Improvements: Replacement and upgrade of multiple wet pipe alarm check valves and installation of a new 10-inch interior wet feed main connecting the fire pump room to a new riser room.
  • Cold Storage & Freezer Protection: Use of dry pendent sprinklers through insulated metal panel (IMP) ceilings in areas maintained below 40°F, with wet sprinklers in areas above 40°F.
  • Preaction System Installation: Double interlock preaction system protecting freezer and cold dock areas, complete with dry air equipment and linear heat detection for enhanced control and responsiveness.
  • Expanded Coverage: Extension of existing wet systems into new office and support areas, protection of interstitial spaces, and integration of ESFR dry pendent sprinklers where required.
  • System Adaptability: Installation of flexible sprinkler connections to accommodate building movement and ensure long-term system durability.
