Dry pipe sprinkler systems are pressurized with air or nitrogen to hold the main dry pipe valve in a closed position. The valve is typically set in a temperature-controlled or heated space. This valve keeps the water supply from entering the pipe until the system is triggered, then the valve opens and one or more of the sprinkler heads are activated. Dry pipe sprinkler systems are normally used in food processing plants, box in box or commercial freezers, unheated warehouses, loading docks, parking garages or areas where temperatures can reach below 40 degrees F.
